Agriculture CS Festus Mwangi Kiunjuri is a likeable and amiable politician. When he speaks, specifically in mother tongue, even the old folks nod with agreement and admiration.

When speaking in either English or Kiswahili, despite the butt jokes about his “chida ya matamchi,” people keenly listen too acknowledging his gift of oration and clarity of thoughts.

His political CV does not end with the gift of oration, Mwangi Kiunjuri, for that is the name he is popularly known in, in political circles, is a skilled political mobilizer.

The La Mada Meetings

In the last few days, in the wake of the alleged nefarious La Murder meetings by influential Mt. Kenya leaders, Mwangi Kiunjuri, who holds the most important docket of Agriculture, that would obviously interest the people of the region, has come out categorically that he has nothing to do with the so-called “development meetings” and that he is not interested.

This raises more questions than answers. What does he know that we don’t? Who is this Mwangi Kiunjuri?

Kiunjuri: background

The Moi University Bachelor of Education (Arts) is a self-made politician who has worked his way up through hard-nosed grit and determination. Along the way, since his debut as MP for Laikipia East in 1997 at the young age of 28, he has won the admiration, confidence, and trust of retired President Mwai Kibaki who in his last term appointed him Assistant Minister for Water, the current President Uhuru Kenyatta and the Deputy President Dr. William Ruto.

After completing his A Level education in 1989, Mwangi Kiunjuri was briefly employed as untrained teacher in his rural Laikipia home. Being paid a paltry sh.30 per day pushed him out of the the classroom and into Nanyuki town to work as a matatu tout, a real Makanga, as he waited to join Maseno University, then constituent college of Moi University, Eldoret, where he graduated in 1994.

After graduation he immersed himself in local politics for constitutional change and eventually in 1997, using his popularity in the Nanyuki matatu terminus, the youthful mobiliser convinced the people of Laikipia East to elect him their MP on a Democratic Party ticket. He retained the seat in 2002 on a Narc ticket and in 2007 on a PNU ticket. That is quite impressive for politician.

He was however sunk by the Jubilee wave in the 2013 Laikipia gubernatorial race on a GNU ticket. After two years in the cold, President Kenyatta appointed him into Cabinet as Devolution Secretary in 2015 following the resignation of Ann Mumbi Waiguru, who had sought “light duties” in the wake of the NYS1 scandal.

Begged not to vie

President Kenyatta prevailed upon him not to run for Laikipia Governor in 2017 and appointed him again into cabinet where he is serving as CS in charge of the influential docket of Agriculture.

In the greater scheme of things and in view of succession politics in Mt. Kenya region, Mwangi Kiunjuri’s name is regularly touted as a probable heir to Uhuru Kenyatta, as a regional kingpin, a position that is covered by the lately cowardly and new region’s watermelon, Gatundu South MP, Moses Kuria.

CS Kiunjuri’s latest utterances distancing himself from the regional night meetings and his closeness to Deputy President Dr. William Ruto will definitely buttress his importance and shift the eyes of political pundits on him.

It is not lost on the pundits that his political trajectory, from a mere tout to a Cabinet Secretary, almost mirrors the self-declared Hustler’s rise from a chicken seller to a Deputy President.

Should the two gifted mobilizers from very humble backgrounds form a political tag team in 2022, the dynasties will not know what hit them. To use popular parlance on these streets, “dynasties will view State House on Viusasa in 2022”
